Whoever came up with the phrase “big things come in small packages” might as well have been referring to the 2026 Mazda CX-30. The CX-30 is the smallest SUV in Mazda’s lineup, but it packs a punch as large as, if not larger than, its competitors. Everything Mazda gets right in its “zoom zoom” philosophy is poured here into its smallest SUV. That means that driving something small can indeed be a big experience.
How does the CX-30 handle as a day-to-day vehicle, particularly when it comes to hauling around the family? As long as that family isn’t too large, it turns out the smaller SUV has lots to offer.

What This Dad Digs about the 2026 Mazda CX-30 Turbo Premium Pro
Zoom, Zoom. Move, Move – Driving a Mazda can be a phenomenal experience, and in the CX-30, that experience does not disappoint, thanks to the peppy engine and the tight handling. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that creates a punchy 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Merging in and out of city traffic is where this CX-30 shines, as the shorter body allows for quick maneuvering. Add in the assertive engine, and you’ll feel like the king of the road.
Handling is responsive, and the CX-30 corners nicely, even at higher speeds. The driver’s seat is the perfect distance from the ground, which allows for a grounded feel that’s not actually that low to the ground. While driving, the CX-30 actually feels heavier than expected, creating a stable but nimble experience behind the wheel.
Small but Mighty – The Dad life consists of always filling your car with the accessories of parenthood. This means cargo space matters. The CX-30 is no minivan but there is surprisingly enough space throughout out to make daily grocery runs or after school sport practice an easy chore. Behind the two rear seats, the CX-30 offers 20.2 cubic feet of space and when the kid safety seats don’t need to be strapped in, those seats fold down to expand the cargo area to 45.2 cubic feet. Don’t expect to get a large stroller in this space easily with the rear seats up but there’s more than enough cargo space to have fun with.

Handsome as Always – The CX-30 is a handsome vehicle and understated in all the best ways. Mazda’s styling for the CX-30, and indeed all their vehicles, is a visual flair of powerful confidence that manages to remain humbling and subtle. It looks like a grown-up’s SUV and you’ll feel like a grownup driving it. There are no aggressive styling lines on the body, which is interesting for a vehicle that has this level of aggressive pep. Instead, Mazda accentuates elegant curves and smooth surfaces that almost give the CX-30 a futuristic look.

Inside, the CX-30’s cabin is minimalist, almost to a fault. Components all feel nice and “premium” to the touch, but there is so much unused surface space that the interior almost feels like it lacks character or a sense of excitement. The good thing is that Mazda manages to make the front seat feel like a cockpit and that adds an extra layer of thrill to the CX-30’s enthusiastic driving experience.

The Turbo Premium Plus Advantage – Mazda offers the CX-30 in a slew of various trim levels, each one offering perks that contribute to the overall experience. The Turbo Premium Plus trim level our CX-30 came package with is the highest trim level offered and it’s tough to imagine the CX-30 without some of the nifty features. Where those features shine the brightest is the integrated safety features.
The Premium Plus package includes a 360° View Monitor with front and rear parking sensors, Smart Brake Support-Rear and Rear Crossing, Rear Cross-Traffic Braking, and Cruising and Traffic Support. The 360° View Monitor alone is a lifesaver and is particularly helpful when navigating into a tight parking space. The package also includes driver assistance technology that controls speed, distance from other vehicles, and keeps the CX-30 in your lane, all without input from the driver. Helpful for those moments when the kids are screaming at ya from the backseat.

New for 2025 – CX-30 customers now have the option to experience some technological enhancements such as Alexa Built-in and Mazda Online Navigation. Alex Built-in allows the driver to harness the power of Amazon’s assistant to make certain hands-free, voice commands like changing the temperature, playing your favorite streaming content, or controlling their smart home devices while in the vehicle. Meanwhile, Mazda Online Navigation offers expanded mapping data with live traffic and the ability to do over-the-air map updates when connected via Mazda Connected Services.
What Gets This Dad’s Downvote
Turbo-ly Expensive – The CX-30 is a blast to drive but driving it is more fun than frugal. The CX-30 gets 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Not bad fuel economy but not what you’d expect for a vehicle this size. To make things even more dicey, Mazda recommends using premium gasoline. Makes me wish for a hybrid or electric version of the CX-30.
Small Joys
The 2025 Mazda CX-30 starts at $25,195 for the base S trim level which feel exactly the appropriate price point. While on the smaller side, the CX-30 is a fantastic drive that looks stylish and still has room for the family. But as engrossing as the features in the Turbo Premium Plus are, this trim level ratchets up the price to $37,150. While the extras may justify the rise in cost, its difficult to ignore the fact that you can get a larger vehicle for that price range.

Still, Mazda is a trusted name that doesn’t disappoint when it comes to an exquisite driving experience. As any Dad Driver will tell you, sometimes its the small joys in life that you have to focus on. If driving the Mazda CX-30 everyday is one of those joys, I’d count myself a lucky Dad.
